What are you waiting for?
The first CNEX Chinese Documentary Pitching Forum, which took place in 2010, was well received by both attendees and industry professionals. Many projects were offered collaboration and co-production deals from international buyers and broadcasters. Last year, commissioning editors from Sundance, Sunnyside of the Doc, BBC, Arte, NHK, Discovery Asia, National Geography, Phoenix TV, Sun TV, Taiwan Public TV, Wan Wan China Times Group, as well as industry professionals and experts were invited to participate. This year, we will continue the success and launch the 2nd annual Chinese Documentary Pitching Forum. 19 projects were selected out of hundreds of submissions from around the world. The accepted projects cover a wide range of topics, exploring greater breadth and depth, and leaving profound impressions. We have also increased the calibers of this year’s industry professionals to include distributors and production companies.
A 2-day Producers’ Lab immediately follows the CCDF Pitching Forum
In Taiwan, producers traditionally haven’t been able to have as a successful a career trajectory as directors. Most directors end up doubling as producers. However, directors focus on more creative aspects while producers focus on more the administrative and logistics. In recent years, more narrative projects are realizing the need to have producers onboard; therefore the role of a producer is gaining recognition. But for documentary projects a producer is still missing from most projects.
Documentaries typically aren’t considered money generators. However, it is able to shed light on our collective social consciousness. Therefore, in order for documentary films to have greater impact, it is even more imperative that documentary films receive distribution and reach the widest audience possible. “How to enter a market and reach an audience” is the question that all documentary filmmakers must tackle. A good producer can increase resources, tools, and expand on a well-crafted distribution and marketing channels in order to provide the director with the best environment to realize his creative visions.
This year CNEX presents the CNEX Documentary Academy: attend a 3-day Pitching Forum as an observer and participate in a 2-day of Producer’s Lab. In 5 days you will understand what it takes to pitch a project; what international commissioning editors and buyers are looking for; and what subjects or story-telling techniques have international appeal. Through the Forum and the Lab you will gain deeper understanding on how to best position your film, how to think outside the box and to be inspired to take your film to new heights.
We welcome all documentary filmmakers, film industry professionals, students to become an observer and be a part of the story-telling process!
