Orlando BAGWELL is Director of the JustFilms media content fund at the Ford Foundation and is responsible for the Foundation\u2019s global program in this field. In 2004, Orlando Bagwell joined the Ford Foundation as the new Media Production Program Officer in the Media, Arts and Culture unit. Orlando has a distinguished career of over 25 years as an independent filmmaker and producer.\u00a0 His long list of achievements includes 4 Emmy Awards and numerous Emmy nominations, 3 George Peabody Awards, and the 1994 New York Film Festival Grand Prize, among many others.<\/p>\n

We work mainly by making grants or loans that build knowledge and strengthen organizations and networks. Since our financial resources are modest compared with societal needs, we focus on key problem areas and program strategies. Created with gifts and bequests by Edsel and Henry Ford, the foundation is an independent, nonprofit, nongovernmental organization, with its own board, and is entirely separate from the Ford Motor Company. The trustees of the foundation set policy and delegate authority to the president and senior staff for the foundation\u2019s grant making and operations. Program officers in the United States, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Latin America explore opportunities to pursue the foundation\u2019s goals, formulate strategies and recommend proposals for funding.<\/p>\n

JustFilms<\/p>\n

With the explosion of digital media production over the past decade, there is far more film and video content available from which audiences can choose. But it remains a challenge for most documentary filmmakers to find support \u2013 and audiences \u2013 for works that address social issues in meaningful and compelling ways. JustFilms seeks to support courageous filmmakers to complete their important works and to help them reach a growing audience of engaged and socially conscious viewers.<\/p>\n

JustFilms supports works that educate, motivate and create positive change in people\u2019s lives by conveying stories that have the power to transform how we think and act. We seek to:<\/p>\n

\u2022Enlarge the conversation on issues of importance by investing in documentary films that capture people\u2019s imaginations and engage them in shaping their futures.<\/p>\n

\u2022Expand the community of independent documentary filmmakers and lift the voices of new and innovative filmmakers from around the world.<\/p>\n

\u2022Help filmmakers craft important stories, and also develop strategies for finding and building audiences across a variety of platforms.<\/p>\n

JustFilms will deepen the Ford Foundation\u2019s support for hallmark documentary films.
